By S. Douglas
I recently found these type of kits for sale for the "do-it-yourself-er" and thought I would give it a try.Dorman is a company that's been around a LONG time and I have used their products many times before, so I rationalized that the purchase of a Dorman product from Amazon was a good risk. The reason for wanting heated seats? Well, living in Michigan, it can be cold in the middle of the summer - and my wife loves heated seats. Actually, before knowing I could add these MYSELF, we purchased her last car with factory heated seats. To get the heated seats, we had to add the $700 "cold package" and wouldn't you know, the "cold package" required the addition of the $1200 sunroof. Egads - nearly $2000 extra expense to get those darned seats! Sure, we have a sunroof (that we don't use) and heated wiper parks (that I'm not sure do much) - but definitely not getting a $1900 benefit. :PWe picked up a used vehicle and I found this kit on Amazon. I bought two, they arrived quickly, and I set out to install them. I do a lot of my own work on our vehicles / bikes / house / whatever; I tend to enjoy it and I can save a fair amount of money - so I may have started out with more experience than the average person, however, there is one important point to make:If you have ever installed an aftermarket stereo in a vehicle, you'll do great with these seat heaters! The kits are high quality, come with everything you need - although the "hog ring pliers" and hog rings are cheap and I wouldn't use them if I needed to redo hog rings. Modern seats today (I was working on a 2004 Van) use plastic clips and velcro for attaching to the seat base, so I didn't need the cheap pliers in the kit.As long as you have basic hand tools, basic electrical tools, a place to work and patience - these kits are a snap to install. Start-to-finish, I was able to put these in both front seats of our van in 4 hours. I was taking my time and had never messed around with seat covers before - I could probably cut that time in half now that I know what tools are needed and where the correct power circuit is.The wiring harness included is darn-near OEM quality and is about 10 feet long. All you need to do is find a circuit in your vehicle that only has power when the ignition key is on (otherwise, you could forget to turn off your heaters and return to a dead battery).

Threw one of these in my wife's Highlander and it is great. Had never done any upholstery work before, but am competent working on cars otherwise. Wasn't that hard. This kit came with everything, even hog rings and a special pliers for them. If I did this again (and I probably will) I would probably use zip ties instead. Otherwise, it was about a two hour job and fairly straightforward. The High setting is very hot, the low is a good temp for everyday in the winter.

Easy to install. Hog ring pliers and clips were useless. It was better to use plastic ties in place of the rings. The wiring was a good length. For the switch I drilled with a 3/4" bit and filed a little bit until it fit. The only drawback is the small size of the pads. You have to choose between upper or lower back. Same with the seat. Over all a good product.
